The 5 Deal-breakers that I will remember for my next relationship

There’s something awesome about coming to the realization that you finally understand what it is you want/need from relationships in your life.  It’s been a slow realization for me, but to finally be able to concretely state all the things (and truthfully, there really aren’t THAT many) that I need to feel secure and content and happy within my relationships.  Specifically – a relationship with a man.  There are five in total that I’d consider deal breakers.  That if these elements aren’t there … then I will hit the breaks on a potential relationship and say “F it! I’m outta here!!”.

Attention.
This should be relatively obvious, but it took me a long time to realize just how much attention I need to feel secure in a relationship.  I’m not overly needy.  I don’t need to talk constantly… but I DO need consistent, daily contact of some sort, even if it’s a brief good morning or good night.  That said – if all my contact with someone is kept to that brief, surface-level only kind of communication – I’ll need something a bit more in depth in order to balance that out and keep a connection with someone.

To note… Attention also means that when you ARE spending time with someone – they have your attention.  No phones or distractions.  They listen to what you have to say and aren’t half tuning you out in the hopes that you’ll finish your sentence so they can jump in with their own.  If you’re going to give me attention – give me your attention – and I’ll do the same for you.  Honestly, the whole “tuning out” thing is a total turn-off and if I feel like I’m not being heard – I’ll just stop talking altogether.  Why waste my time?

Enthusiasm.
This is a two way street.  I will be enthusiastic about talking to someone and seeing them. I expect it in return – because if that is lacking – then what’s the point in trying at all? Love is already complicated enough – lack of enthusiasm about it should NOT even be a factor. I don’t want to be a consolation prize, and neither I’m sure does anyone else.  Be excited to be with me – and I’ll give you the same.  🙂

Honesty – not just in words – but in actions.
A lack of honesty only breeds a lack of trust, and in my experience, once that happens – it’s ultimately game over.  If I don’t trust you – then I don’t respect you.  And if I don’t respect you – I will never love you.  I can be one of the most patient and understanding women.  What I think is interesting is that people who’ve struggled with this, with me, in my past – always made an incorrect assumption as to how I would react to a situation.  Had they just informed me of what was going on – I’d have been, and in turn, they’d have been fine.  Assumptions can kill things fast.  Don’t assume – give me the benefit of the doubt and TRUST that I’ll react in a way that’s respectful and compassionate towards others.

Humility & a desire to improve.
This is more about me… I’m only human.  I will occasionally make a mistake – as we all do! The key here is that I’ll own up to mistakes I make and work to improve myself and learn and grow from the mistakes I make.  Rarely will I make the same mistake twice.  I understand this about myself, and I understand it about others.  I would hope to find someone who has that same level of understanding and compassion.

Attraction.
This is important – but it’s not all about appearance.  Do we WANT to touch each other?  Kiss each other?  I know that if I an’t keep my hands off someone – that’s a good sign – but it better be reciprocated – or else – again – what’s the point?  Sex – while not my GOAL for a relationship – is incredibly important.  I’m a firm believer that the frequency and quality of a couple’s sex life directly correlates to the overall health of their relationship.

So tell me, what are your deal breakers?

What does it mean to be a family?

family 1I’m 32 years old, and I’m still learning what it means to be a family.  I feel like what I know gets added to on a daily basis.  They don’t know it, but a family member really hurt my feelings today.  So much so, it brought me to tears.  We’ll call this person “M”. Now I’ll take some responsibility and say that perhaps I do not communicate as often as I should with M, and that perhaps when I do communicate, I will sometimes communicate too much.  This gives them fodder to worry over.  Believe me when I say, lesson learned.  But there is some behavior and some things, that when said or even implied, hurt.  It strikes a blow and cuts deep, because it is family who does it.  People you trust to be there, no matter what.  Doesn’t matter how stupid or annoying or messed up things get, they’ll still be there.  They may roll their eyes at you, poke fun, or never let you live some of that shit down, but they are still there.  They will root for you, even if you are the underdog with what seems like no chance in hell to win the game.  But when I think about it, perhaps that’s too much for one person to do.  This is why we need a family.  A family isn’t one person, it is many.

Tonight, M cut me deeply and she doesn’t even know how much. I know I can fix it and things will be on a good track again, but I hate that M, of all the people in my family, we should be the closest.  So often, it is M who makes me feel like I am not good enough.  Or that I’m a loser for the failures I’ve had.  I am simply human. But family decided to show me something tonight. Two other family members rose up and made me feel better.  My father and my aunt.

It was an interesting chat with my father.  I can count on one hand the number of heart to hearts or wisdom sharing moments we’ve had in my entire life.  Tonight is one of them.  He shared how and why he sees me as being very different from M.  I needed to hear that tonight.  I needed to hear that the hard work I’ve put in to NOT be like M, is working and that I’m someone different.  Dad’s insight helped me feel better about who I am, and how to approach life.  I knew when I called him that he would say pretty much exactly what he did as far as what to do.  He shared his pride over me.  Says he never worries or is scared that I won’t some how make it in this world.  That I’m bright and positive and funny and bubbly.  That I have a huge brain and that I love people.  He said that I don’t let fear or stress or worry take control of me and control what I do.  It is very true.  It doesn’t mean I don’t get scared… cuz I definitely do.  It’s the ability to power through.  It’s funny, for a moment I was hearing Granddad, only it was my father.  Guess I get my strength and stubborn ambition from a few places in my life.  Dad’s thoughts were that you don’t stop.  You don’t worry about what other people in the family think.  You stay heads down and focused and you work on the things that you need to make you feel happy, content, safe and fulfilled and you back away from the people who do not serve towards those goals.

Then a bit later, I talked to my Aunt.  She affirmed that M does love me and my children, a fact I already knew.  But I did need to hear it too.  I just don’t like the cutting remarks.  Or the fear.  or the blatant favoritism of my children.  I adore my aunt.  She has always been someone I enjoy seeing and catching up with.  We so often have secret laughs from across the room about something.  I hate that life gets so busy that I don’t see my family as often as I’d like.  Because many of them, truly are cool people., who I love dearly and support 100%.

After talking with my family, I felt a lot better about things.  I’m still hurt over M, but I know we’ll get through it.  We are family.  We are stuck with each other.  It’s what families do.

And so this is christmas…

Christmas-Light

What have I done, another year over… a new one just begun.

What have I accomplished this year?  A lot in many ways, and yet, so little in others.  I started a new job.  Moved from a large house to a smaller house.  Had an amazing adventure down to the Caribbean.  I’ve made some incredible friendships.  I’ve also lost some friendships that meant a lot to me.  I knocked down a few of my own internal walls and let some people in.  Learned, not just to love again, but to actually WANT to love and be loved again.  I found a way to honor my son this year.  Got closer to my daughter than ever before and successfully navigated the age of 3 with my youngest.  I purchased myself a new car (my first), accomplished quite a few things on my bucket list, worked on some amazing projects, attended a couple of amazing comic conventions (Yes, I am a nerd), and generally had more of a life than I’ve ever had before.  What a year!

I’ve spent some time tonight thinking about the changes in me over the last year.  Physically and emotionally.  I’m proud of where I am and of where I’ve come.  I still see the growth I have to make ahead of me.  It doesn’t scare me, it excites me.  The older people get, the better they seem to get.  Or at least the more in tune with themselves they become.

Something I’d like to see more improvement on this next year is my self esteem.  I hate how low mine is.  On some levels, I see my worth.  I see what I can bring to the table.. strengths and weaknesses.  But on other levels, I can’t ever see myself the way others do.  My friends, family and loved ones tell me what they see in me often.  And most of the time, I either don’t believe them, or just struggle because I can’t see it.  Believe me, I wish I could.  As I’ve aged, I’ve learned to like myself more.  My hope is that it will continue to grow over time.

Today, I made fudge.  It used to be a tradition in our house.  We’d make fudge, cookies, and other holiday treats.  Some would be passed out as gifts to coworkers and acquaintances, others would make it to parties we’d attend or be included in the treats left out for Santa.  It felt good to make it.  Presents I’d ordered for xmas gifts started arriving today.  It was thrilling to open the door and find a big giant box on the doorstep.  One large item for the little one, and one of the items I’d ordered for T arrived today.  Should be plenty more of those to go around in the next few days as more packages arrive.  My office will become “Santa’s workshop” where no one is allowed entry other than myself and the cat.  🙂  It’s the most… wonderful time… of the year!! 🙂

Goodnight Neverland.  Much love to you.  Dream sweet.
